Hmm. Walling food! Only once had a problem when me and the dog where surrounded by about 50 heifers who wete all taking it in turns to have a charge in. They were all bluster though like the chavs that like to hang about in certain ateas of Swindon!
One kick from a Cow or Horse, and you won't be laughing, which I know very well, luckily not me on the receiving end.
Best thing is always pay attention and go around them to not scare them. Dogs on leads always and not just with Cow/Horses but any animal in the field.
I have been chased by heard of cattle in a field very close to home. I was with Roxy, she was on a lead, but I had to let go of it so we could both run as fast we could. We couldn't get to the style we entered the field by, and so we had to get over a wall with barbed wire on the top. I grabbed her and threw her over, then jumped over myself. Very scary and not fun, but we lived.
A few other encounters elsewhere means I now avoid where ever possible.
They will only chase you if you run away lol My advise is dont take your eyes off them and they will back away from outstreached arms. The only time this didnt work for me was crossing a field in the dark when I could hear them charging towards a group of friends and I was in the way. They wern't going to see my arms, but a scream of fear stopped them in their tracks. It was still too dark for me to see them even though I could feel their breath on my face :-)
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger,
Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone.
I would mostly walk through the middle of the field unless there was a particularly big group or a BULL.
Came across a bull when doing the Cheltenham Circular Walk, sign on field boundary and cache details both said beware bull but no bull was in sight - until I got right across the field 50m from next gate. Fortunately he was more interested in eating grass than chasing me.
Like other posts said, don't try and stare them out and don't spook them.
I definitely have more of a problem with horses than cows. I wouldn't worry at all about wandering through a field of cows, and have done so on many an occasion. Horses are big and scary.... and fast!! When walking through a field of cows, more often than not they seem to ignore me. If they do show interest, they mosey on over at a sedate pace. Come even close to the other side of the fence of a field with just one horse in it, and it seems to gallop over at full tilt.
I fully understand peoples concerns about horses, a trample or a kick could be lethal. Although I am not really a horsey person myself, I was lucky to grow up around them as my aunt owns a local riding stables, so I have a bit more of an understanding then I do with cattle. The only time I would personally be nervous of walking though an area of horses that I didn't know, would be if they had new born foals with them. I find cows terrifying.
Horses have never been a problem with us, have walked through paddocks with them many times I don't think they ever mean harm, they just seem to be friendly

I don't think horses ever mean harm either, but nor do I think cows mean harm. I think both horses and cows just seem to be friendly - however, horses a little too friendly for my liking.
And a lot faster in approaching me to be friendly! And a lot taller! With longer necks, and bigger mouths. And their eyes are orange, their tongues are black, and they have purple prickles all over his back - and their favourite food is Nick flapjack!
