Cotswold Caching #4 - Geocaching Road Trip ’15
Event Date: 12 Jul 15
Event Date: 12 Jul 15
The fourth of our bimonthly Cotswold Caching events.
Sunday 12th July 3pm – 5pm
This event will be logable on GC.com, TerraCaching.com, and Opencaching.org.
The local Cotswold Caching group will be holding a meet ‘n’ greet event every couple of months throughout 2015. It will be held on the second Sunday of the month and each event will take place at a different location within the Cotswolds.
For this fourth event we welcome you to The Swan Inn in Kingsdown. It is a very small family run country Inn dating back to the 18th century.
As does another nearby watering hole, this establishment has a close connection with years-gone-by quarrying of Bath stone. From the establishment's website:
"The ground slopes very suddenly beneath the very foundations of the old inn and visitors can see a large iron strap running along the whole length of the back of the inn with one end round either corner.
The bolts, which are seen at intervals in the strap secure large iron chains, the other ends of which are fastened to girders in between the rocks of disused quarry across the road.
The purpose of this strange anchorage is twofold. In the first place, the very position of the inn makes it essential that there shall be no subsidence of the foundations towards the valley 400ft below and, secondly, the iron strap, being firmly fixed to the hillside will help to hold the walls secure when buffeted by high winds."
The last three Cotswold Caching event cache pages featured a picture of the establishment. For this event cache page we present to you a view from the location...
There is not a lot of room inside this establishment and so we are hoping for a fine day, otherwise it could get very cosy. As long as there is not a downpour we will be outside. There are picnic tables in the front garden which is where the logbook will be so that everyone has easy access to it. There is also more picnic tables in the lower rear garden, accessed by steps so that area is not really accessible for strollers or wheelchairs.
The venu is open from 12pm to 10:30pm on Sundays. Serving of food ceases before this event starts, so please arrive earlier if you are looking to eat. The landlord suggests to arrive by 1pm and advises to contact them before the day to say you would like food to avoid disappointment if there is over demand. Please contact Pete or Patricia on 01225 742269, or visit the establishment link above for further contact details.
Non-yappy dogs (landlord's words) on leads and children are welcome. Children under 14 though are not permitted beside the bar.
There is free parking at the venue, however space is at a premium. Please park as close together as possible, and if you are able to vehicle share to get to the event then all the better. There are very few other places to park other than at the pub car park, but I have listed a few suggestions in the additional waypoints if it does get busy and you get stuck for a space.
Logging an attend on this event could net you a Geocaching Road Trip '15 Souvenier. Additionally, at the time of this event cache submission, there were 110 Mystery Caches within a 6 mile radius of the event location, of which quite a number rated T5, D5, or both, so this may be a good place to get together to work on some of those local toughies so you are ready to pick up further Road Trip '15 Souveniers over the coming weeks.
