This looks quite fun, and has location based games possibilities. A newish grid referencing system. E.g. my Siddington lock flight cache is hidden at: niece.remedy.repair
So, on Saturday at 9am, we are meeting at: smooth.descended.clock
I will have to soon look at a couple of other spots to meet up with the rest of you as Big T Little C, Storm and I are arriving to the area later than the rest of you. Will discuss in the other thread.
Shame you need to pay and it doesn't say what the cost will be - will not use that then.
Nearly always the way. I hadn't got that far at looking at it
Thank you for that gilesrhysjones This time it went in without asking me to load my payment details.
Will have to play further now but one thing if I take it 'out on the road', my tablet does NOT have Internet when I leave home, so will need to find out how to use it in 'stand alone' mode.
Hi gilesrhysjones. Thank you for joining up with us here and explaining about it a bit more. It does look like a great concept with many possible uses. Good to hear it is free for the main part, and I will look forward to playing with it a bit more then

Hi all, for offline functionality you can use our what3words Android version that has a compass mode to navigate between 3 word addresses or try Crowsflight which performs a similar function for iOS. Thy use the GPS within your phone or tablet so no cellular or wifi needed. For full mapping try Navmii (there is a free and a paid version) or try GeoFlyer (free and paid) that has some pretty funky 3d mapping and waypoint functionality. You can grab them from our partner page - w3w.co/partners. Give me a shout if you need any help.
Thank you gilesrhysjones for the info. I will have a try with the android version sometime over the coming days. Just clicked your holiday link Do you originally come from this area?
For now for a little bit of fun I have published the first opencaching.org.uk cache making use of the system. A fairly simple virtual. Obviously a very easy virtual if anyone has read this thread Wonder how long it will take someone to work out if they have not heard of what3words.
My recent history of oc.org.uk tells me that the FTF will probably be available for a good while, so no need to rush Only a simple cache, definitely much potential for something much bigger and better using it.
gilesrhysjones, do we know Groundpeak's stance on the site as far as using to place caches? Their history of us using other sites have been quite inconsistent from site to site, e.g. no links to sites that have advertising, but allow people to use Youtube which has advertising
Would want to know before creating something bigger on GC.com. If we don't know I can mail a reviewer and ask, but the last two times I have mailed about such queries, one being to do with my vampire game site, I have had no response

Gackt - my dad is from Stroud and my parents have had a cottage there for 45+ years so it is a home from home. We had conversations with Groundpeak a while ago but nothing for a while. I'll reach out to them again. what3words takes no advertising & is free to use (though you can access the serve through others who might do) so we should be ok. Love the GC - bring on half term when I am down again!
I haven't looked at this in any great detail but to me the biggest problem looks to be that there is no clue as to the approx location.
With long/lat co-ords or a map reference at least you get some sort of idea where in the world you are.
The three words gets you to a 3m square location anywhere in the World. Isn't that close enough?
Or is the issue TJ, that without the app, the three words could be anywhere until you look it up in the app, whereas lat/long you've got a basic idea?
Yes. For example - Proof.Breed.Masterful Could be in the UK, USA or Uganda. Whereas I know N52 05.703 W001 54.590 is not only in the UK but is somewhere near my house.
I still like the idea of What3Words, I can see its uses.
